Underwater Treadmill or Swimming Pool: How Canine Water Work Differs

If you have started looking into water work for your dog you will have seen two very different set-ups: a glass-sided treadmill that fills with water, and an ordinary pool. People often assume the treadmill is simply the fancier option. It is not. It is a different tool for a different job.

What the underwater treadmill is for

The treadmill exists to make water work measurable. The therapist sets the water depth, which decides how much of the dog's weight is supported, and the belt speed, which decides how hard they work. Both can be recorded and repeated exactly next week.

That repeatability is the whole point in rehabilitation. If you are rebuilding a muscle after surgery, you need to know that this week is harder than last week by a known amount. A dog swimming freely will not give you that.

What an open pool is for

A pool is free swimming, and the dog sets the effort. They swim hard, then float, then chase something, then rest. It is genuinely excellent exercise, it uses the whole body, and it takes almost all the load off the joints.

What it is not is controlled. Which is exactly why it suits a healthy dog and exactly why it is wrong for a controlled rehabilitation protocol.

Side by side

• Control. Treadmill wins, comprehensively.
• Whole body movement. Pool wins, since swimming uses more than gait.
• Enjoyment. Most dogs prefer the pool, and enjoyment is not a trivial factor in whether an owner keeps coming.
• Cost. Pool time is cheaper than clinical treadmill sessions.
• Who supervises. Treadmill means a qualified hydrotherapist. A recreational pool means trained staff, which is not the same qualification and should not be presented as one.

The short answer

If your dog is being rehabilitated, the treadmill and the professional running it are what you are paying for. If your dog is well and needs exercise, enrichment or confidence in water, a pool is the better and cheaper answer.
