Is Hydrotherapy Good for Dogs? What It Helps, and What It Does Not

Asked about a dog who needs it, the answer is yes and it is worth the money. Asked about a healthy three year old spaniel whose owner has been told hydrotherapy is good for dogs, the answer is that you are about to pay clinical prices for exercise.

What it genuinely helps

• Post-operative recovery. Rebuilding muscle without loading a healing joint is the thing water does better than anything else.
• Arthritis management. Movement without impact, which is otherwise a difficult combination to achieve.
• Hip and elbow dysplasia. Supporting the surrounding muscle so the joint carries less.
• Weight loss in dogs who cannot exercise normally. A route into movement when land exercise hurts.
• Some neurological conditions, where controlled, supported movement helps re-establish patterns.

What it will not do

It will not repair a structural problem that needs surgery. It will not replace pain relief your vet has prescribed. It will not fix behaviour, though a properly tired dog is often a better behaved one. And it will not turn a healthy dog into a healthier one any faster than ordinary swimming would.

The honest version for a healthy dog

If your dog has no diagnosis, the benefits people describe from hydrotherapy are almost entirely the benefits of swimming: low impact cardiovascular work, whole body muscle use, real tiredness without joint loading, and something mentally new. You can have all of that in a recreational pool for less, with no referral and no assessment.

The one thing you do not get is clinical oversight. If your dog needs that, no amount of pool time substitutes for it.
