Can Puppies Swim? When It Is Safe to Start

Almost every puppy can swim in the sense that the instinct is there. Whether yours should be in a pool this month is a different question, and it has less to do with the swimming than with vaccinations, confidence and timing.

The vaccination answer first

Wait until your puppy has finished their vaccination course and your vet is happy for them to be out in public spaces. After that there is one more rule worth diarising: dogs should not swim for 48 hours after a vaccination, so if a booster is due, plan around it.

If you are at all unsure whether your puppy is ready, ask your vet rather than a website. We would far rather you came a fortnight late than a fortnight early.

Why the wait matters

A puppy who meets water calmly, in warm water, with their person nearby tends to become a dog who is relaxed about water for life. A puppy whose first experience is cold, chaotic or forced often does not.

What a first puppy swim actually looks like

Less swimming than you would think. A good first session is mostly exploring, mostly on the steps, and finishes early.

  • Ten minutes exploring the room before anything gets wet. New floor, new echo, new smells.
  • Four feet on the submerged steps, in the shallowest water, with no expectation of going further.
  • A short supported swim only if they are clearly ready, and only briefly.
  • Out while they are still enjoying it, rather than when they are flagging.

What never happens: puppies are not lifted in, dropped in, thrown in or coaxed in with force. One frightening entry can take months to undo.

How long, and how often

Thirty minutes is right for essentially every puppy, and much of it will not be spent swimming. An hour is more than a young dog can use. Short and frequent beats long and occasional every time.
